The problem is needing to mate a nut with the open end of a bolt which is in a location that is difficult to reach. The solution is not to have a pot of apricot jam and dip ones finger into it before poking the nut into the required place.

Spanners are not much help, open ended ones have no ability to retain nuts, the box spanners I have are too deep and the nut will sink into them beyond the reach of the bolt end.

I 3D printed this solution for m3 nuts, which may owe its simplicity to brilliance or to being obvious. It did occur to me that a magnet on a stick would probably also be a good solution.
